Day Four - Anchorage

More snow overnight and it was snowing energetically this morning when I finally ventured out.


The words of the Avis guy "please initial in 5 places and sign here to decline the Collision Damage Waiver" which saved me US $115 a day but meant I am fully liable for any accident, were front of mind.  So I decided I would take a cab into Downtown and have a mooch around now that the Fur Rondy dog sled racing had finished and the streets were back to normal.

I mooched around the 5th Avenue Mall which was very ho-hum and bought nothing except lunch, but by then it had stopped snowing and the sun had come out.
So I wandered down to the waterfront, said hello to the statue of Captain James Cook at Resolution Park, man that guy travelled !

From the statue blurb: In 1776, Captain Cook set out on his 3rd voyage aboard his flagship "Resolution", to find a north-west passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic.  He surveyed the coast of northwest America and Alaska, but failing to find the passage to the Atlantic, turned south from the Bering Strait and sailed to the Sandwich Isles where, on the island of Hawaii, was killed on 14th Feb 1779.

I headed for home via the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.  This followed the shoreline for a while before turning inland and following the Chester Creek walkway.

It was all as pretty as a picture, lots of deep snow, lots of trees, tinkly brooks, with the occasional walker/runner/biker/skier/dog walker.

There seemed to be more snow here than further out where my motel is.



It's noticeably warmer today, -4 despite the snow, and I had to shed my thick jacket for some of the walk.

I didn't see any moose
I presume these are mostly for use in summer.
Clever !  Tools secured by wire cable.  I bet some of them still go missing.




It's hard work walking in deep snow, up to my knees in places, and I feel like I've earned my Mac n Cheese for dinner.

Day Seven - Turnagain Arm and Chugach National Park

Another stunning day today, very cold but clear and sunny. I headed south from Anchorage this time, down Turnagain Arm through Chugach National Park to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre. This was mostly aimed at children, but in paying my entry fee I have helped conserve Alaskan natives, so there was a feelgood factor. This is an Oomingmak, or Muskox.  This grows really soft wool close to it's skin, under the outer layer that you can see here.  It is called qiviut (pronounced ki-vee-ute) and they shed it at the end of winter.  It is collected and knitted into very warm hats and scarves by clever Alaskan women. Oomingmak or Muskox Water troughs have to be heated to stop them freezing.  There was a huge amount of snow here, at least a metre deep. They have a sense of humour too. Day Five - Anchorage

Another bitterly cold day that was grey, and didn't have me wanting to rush out and explore.  Instead I washed my woollies in the hand basin and strung them out in my room to dry.  I had a brief foray to Walmart for supplies and then veged out for the rest of the day, watching Joe Biden vs Bernie Sanders vs Mike Bloomberg vs Elizabeth Warren on "Super Tuesday" - an important day in the Democratic primary.  I find American politics incredibly complicated, especially their election process, and I don't pretend to understand a quarter of it, but it was fascinating to watch nevertheless. I have booked a guided walk on the Matanuska Glacier for tomorrow afternoon.  It's a 2 hour drive north of Anchorage to the Glacier, and then it will be 2 1/2 hour walk on the glacier.  I'm hoping for a fine day.

Day Nineteen - Fairbanks and the North Pole

I woke about 8am after my lateness getting to bed.  Breakfast is between 8am and 10am, so I took a leisurely shower and sorted my rats nest of a bag into some sort of order.  We had to bring a duffle to make them easier to pack into the vehicles, which works for stowing bags, but with one big empty space, it becomes a jumble in no time at all and you can't find anything. Breakfast was good, cheesy scrambled egg with bacon, cereals, a variety of toast and muffins etc.  My only complaint was the coffee was lukewarm.  I must get their earlier tomorrow. I pottered about for a bit, washed some essentials, and then headed out.  The town of North Pole is a short distance away from Fairbanks, and it has to be done really. I hate selfies, but I had to on this occasion.   I was amused to see the same toilet paper hoarding is happening in Santa's home too.  Maybe he's stockpiling for Christmas!
